Play @ Toronto Light Festival
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of winter? The cold weather? How dark it is? How you can’t wait to go home after work to stay home? The Toronto Light Festival might change your mind.
If you are visiting Toronto in the winter, take the time to head east across the city to the Distillery District. For a 2nd year in a row, Toronto is hosting a light festival where artists across North America showcase their work. When you think of the darkness that winter brings, think of the beautiful lights that the district has to offer. It isn’t just about the magical art you will see, but also plenty of street vendors that serve a variety of food and hot drinks to keep you warm. Enjoy walking around with a plate of poutine and a hot cup of chocolate!
The lights are quite beautiful but it won’t take you longer than 45 minutes to see everything. What I would suggest when checking out the festival is to have a reservation booked to one of the local fantastic restaurants. I attended on a Saturday night and all restaurants were completely booked and even some had a line waiting outside! Think ahead and make the most of your trip to the Distillery District.
My favourite piece of art was where it engaged the crowd and encouraged them to play the piano. As they played, the lights would dance and the song would echo across the alley. It was absolutely beautiful, especially on a cold night. It makes me wish I still remembered how to play piano!
We also had the opportunity to try the infamous Chimney Stax that glows in the dark. Yes it keeps you warm but the line is quite long so be patient! The Chimney Stax costs $15.00 and if I were you, I would suggest getting the original flavour as that is my personal favourite.
The Distillery District is very accessible either by public transportation or by driving from one of our Vacation in Toronto suites. If you have the time, go on a weekday. It is less crowded and you will have more time to enjoy each piece of art. At times over the weekend it could feel like you are being herded like cattle getting from one side to the other.
Other than that, please enjoy! Whether you are there with a group of friends, family or a date night it is the perfect venue to forget about how cold and dark it is and enjoy the night light.
